
Getting Your Spectrum Right: Why the SK15 Holder Actually Matters

You also need a mounting system that won’t just give up and melt under the heat of those specialized wavelengths. That’s why we stick with SK15 ceramic lamp holders. When we push the spectrum to hit those narrow absorption bands, things get hot. Really hot. The ceramic keeps the electrical connection rock-solid while everything else is baking.
Why the SK15?
There’s a reason the SK15 is the go-to. It grips the lamp ends tight and keeps the electrical resistance low. We use high-grade ceramic because, frankly, plastic is useless here—it melts. Even standard porcelain can crack when you’re dealing with the rapid heating and cooling cycles you see in a lab or glass shop. Ceramic just takes the heat. It doesn’t warp or shift. And that’s huge, because if the lamp moves even a fraction, your focal point is gone. If you’re targeting a specific absorption peak, that’s a total nightmare.
The Trade-off: Spectrum vs. Heat
Here’s the thing: when we customize a spectrum for you—maybe by tweaking the quartz envelope or adding specific coatings—we’re often concentrating the heat at the ends of the lamp. If your holder can’t move that heat away, you’ll fry your contacts. Keep in mind that custom spectral lamps usually run hotter than your average IR tube. You’ll want to make sure your cooling fans or heat sinks are up to the task. If the airflow is weak, the SK15 holder becomes the weakest link in your setup.
