
Why Most “Waterproof” Infrared Heaters Actually Fail
Here is a little secret about IPX5 heaters: it’s rarely the heating element that gives out. Usually, it’s the lead-wire junction. Think about it. You’ve got an infrared heater working in a damp or humid spot. Moisture loves to creep into the seals. Then, you add the intense heat from the quartz tube into the mix, and you’ve got a recipe for rapid oxidation. Before you know it, the insulation breaks down and you’ve got a short circuit. Not ideal.
The “Burn Out” Problem
A lot of the gear you see on the market uses basic silicone or some cheap resin for sealing. That stuff just can’t handle the stress of swinging from room temperature to several hundred degrees over and over again. The sealant shrinks. It cracks. And once that seal is gone, moisture hits the electrical contacts. I see this all the time with “commercial grade” units. The seal is basically just a bead of glue. It looks great on day one, but after a few hundred cycles? It’s toast.
Doing it the Right Way
We do things a bit differently. We use a potting process that actually fills those gaps. Instead of glue, we use high-temp fluorosilicone or epoxy resins. The key here is that these materials expand and contract at the same rate as the wires. It creates a chemical bond between the wire insulation and the housing, which stops water from being sucked into the terminal like a straw. If you want a true IPX5 rating, you need this kind of precision. Without a tight seal, the high current running through those leads just speeds up the damage every time a little moisture leaks in.
A Quick Tip for Installation
One thing to keep in mind: because this high-grade potting is so solid, the entry point is pretty rigid. **Don’t bend the wires sharply right at the seal.**If you do, you might crack the potting compound, and then you’re back to square one. Just give the cable some slack. Also, make sure your cable glands are rated for the same temperatures as the heater. There’s no point in having a bulletproof seal if the gland is the weak link in your chain.
